Deadly Ponies have released the first drop of their covetable Spring Summer ‘21 collection in stores and online with some beautiful new hues and textures featuring in the range. Creative director Liam Bowden drew inspiration from Charlotte Perriand’s House of a Young Man, 1935, which considers the ideal studio space at the time; with terracotta tiles, rush chairs, modernist art and unique leathers placed thoughtfully throughout the interior. For the collection itself Liam has referenced different elements in Perriand’s design and reimagined them with a Deadly Ponies twist.

“I look to Charlotte Perriand as a muse. She was a pioneer in the industry and a creative female voice during a time when there were few opportunities, with a really unique style. She would always be seen wearing a stainless steel necklace, as if she was wearing pearls with a really strong, masculine or modern edge,” says Liam Bowden.

This eye-catching range will continue the Deadly Ponies tradition of arriving in three parts with Part I featuring suitably spring hues of moss, thyme and cornflower. A new super-fine, luxurious suede is a stunning addition to Deadly Ponies range of textures and the curvy Cloud Bender is the perfect hero piece to show off this texture in appealing moss.

Part II explores gradient treatments and more tactile textures with a bold, two-toned python dip conflated by ombre-hued amethyst croc. Suede styles are offered in subtle quail which is an instant classic. The vibrant glow capsule is a must-see and references the work of James Turrell, distorting depth and creating an illumination of colour.

“Our digitally-printed glow capsule was inspired by James Turrell’s light rooms, which I was fortunate enough to experience one in Naoshima, Japan. His spaces focus on light itself as the object – feeling limitless and surreal. We wanted to capture that concept and replicate it in our pieces,” adds Liam.

Warming up as with the summer weather is Part III which features a muted sunset-inspired palette in tones of atlantic and terracotta. Sensuous silk taffeta invokes the spirit of long summer nights and adds an elevated shimmer to the new evening pieces. Terracotta python and a custom Rush invite the wearer to envision escaping to balmier climes. Working with a small women’s collective near Deadly Ponies’ eco-atelier in Chiang Mai, Rush is intricately woven using a specialist technique to create an entirely unique design, and yarn which is a true work of art.

Perfectly timed with the launch of their new collection is the opening of Deadly Ponies’ first Australian store located on Armadale’s High Street in Melbourne. The chic new store was designed by renowned interior designer Katie Lockhart and explores the contrast and movement between soft furnishings, oak and metal, with iconic furniture pieces handmade form makers across the century scattered throughout the store.
