Deadly Ponies latest collection is inspired by the ebullient and innovative talents of celebrated New Zealand artist Len Lye. The new capsule collection has been crafted in honour of his extraordinary work and contribution to the international art scene.
Alongside his virtuoso expertise in sculpture, paint and prose, Len Lye was a pioneer in the possibilities of short direct filming, creating unique works via scratching, painting and stencilling directly onto film.
Deadly Ponies have worked closely with the Len Lye Foundation and the New Zealand Film Archive to capture the magic, delight and seduction of Lye’s film in a series of accessories. Using film stills from ‘Rainbow Dance’ and ‘Trade Tattoo’ Deadly Ponies Creative Director Liam Bowden has developed a series of bags, wallets and scarves with visually arresting prints and colours.
The collection launches at the beginning of November to celebrate of the recent opening of the Len Lye Centre in New Plymouth. Spear-headed by the Len Lye Foundation and Govett Brewster Gallery, the centre will act as both a preservation and exhibition medium for Lye’s extensive body of work.
