Beloved leather accessories brand, Deadly Ponies, have released a new capsule collection which continues the brand’s successful foray into plant-based vegan leather. Deadly Ponies first introduced vegan leather to their customers in July 2020, and this new capsule collection features an intricate new development – achieving a soft sand hue for the first time which makes for a chic new limited edition offering.

The capsule collection features much-loved Deadly Ponies shapes, Mr Sling Mini, Mr Minimese and Mr Mini Leopard in sand, with new handles available for purchase separately to add to any companion.

“For this exclusive capsule, we have worked with New Zealand weaver Tanya Doty, who brings a contemporary feel to the age-old craft of basket making,” says Deadly Ponies Creative Director, Liam Bowden. “Tanya has created handles and charms to adorn our cactus leather bags using natural fibres such as raupo, pine needles, rattan, and foraged fibres.”

Tanya Doto’s charming handwoven rattan handles and willow charms in geometric silhouettes were created using artisanal techniques. Each piece can take hours to carefully weave by hand with the unique results a labour of love that are meant to become a cherished keepsake for Deadly Ponies’ fans.

Brand fans may remember that the original release was called Cactus, as the material used is sourced from an organic cactus plantation in Mexico, only the mature leaves are harvested to ensure sustainable plant regeneration – with the pulp used for medicinal purposes. The nopal cactus leaves are then sun-dried, before being processed into the innovative, organic cactus leather used for Deadly Ponies bags.

“This new material had to be totally sustainable, but also achieve a similar look and feel to our more classic leather finishes that our products are known for. It took another year of development to achieve the perfect composition,” adds Bowden.

The resulting plant-based leather had to meet Deadly Ponies’ strict design and manufacturing specifications, ensuring the product remained synonymous with the iconic texture and quality of the brand’s existing leathers. While the initial release was only available in black, the latest innovation means new hue sand is available in a limited quality and is another step forward for Deadly Ponies’ sustainable offering.
