Calling all budding designers

Budding fashion designers, hairdressers and makeup artists now have added incentive to launch their careers through Whanganui UCOL

In association with the Underground Youth Fashion Show on August 9 and 10, Whanganui UCOL will award $1000 scholarships to each of three lucky, first time tertiary students.

The non-refundable and non-transferrable scholarships can only be used for first year study in 2014.

There’s a Certificate in Hairdressing scholarship and a Certificate in Beauty Services scholarship.

There is also a Fashion scholarship which can be used for the first year of the Bachelor of Fashion degree, or the one year Certificate in Fashion Level 4.

Applicants for the scholarships must be involved in the 2013 Underground Fashion Show Once Upon A Time, have never been a UCOL student, and be 25 years or younger.

They are required to submit a summary of why they deserve the study assistance in their area of interest.

UCOL Associate Dean (Creative) Katrina Langdon says Whanganui UCOL is delighted to offer the opportunity for a young person to study towards their future dream career.

“UCOL has been a great supporter of the Underground Fashion Show since its inception,” she says.

“We regard it as the perfect event for our current students to shine, and potential students to get a taste of what their future could hold in the fashion, hair and beauty industries.”

Being a major sponsor of the event UCOL will award a prize to the winner of the Avant Garde category, the only class where tertiary students can compete.

UCOL will also reward the winner of the High Fashion category of the Underground show, which is open to designers who have never, or are not currently studying at a tertiary institute.

In its seventh year, the Underground Youth Fashion Show brings fashion, music, dance, acting, modelling and drama to the stage.

The annual event involves over 300 young people from around the region and combines talent, energy, passion, art, creativity, dedication and flair.
