Buying a Diamond this Summer? You need to read this.

Without recycling the same old story about how hard this year’s been, it’s suffice to say that we all need to be spoilt this Christmas.

Whether that’s with a sleep in, a hug, a new white tee, a drink with friends, or a special, sparkling gem, everyone has their own secret way they want to be treated to something special this summer.

You may have noticed that, aside from our Commercial Bay ‘how to’ stories, we haven’t dived head-long into a myriad of gift guides this season. There are more than enough of them to go around.  Instead, we turned to our friends at The Diamond Shop for their insights into how to make the leap into buying one of life’s most misunderstood yet highly sought-after objects: the humble diamond.

A quick search online tells us how wildly misunderstood diamonds are, and how clever marketing has helped keep the allure alive that diamonds are both inaccessible and just for special occasions.  Turning to Net-a-Porter’s online brother Mr Porter, we found this simple instruction to help even the most budget-conscious shopper start their own diamond-buying journey.

“Everything is dictated by what you can afford,” says Mr Quig Bruning, a jewellery specialist at Sotheby’s. “I think the rule of spending two-three months of salary (on an engagement ring) is outdated. It has to be a figure you feel comfortable with spending, and you have to be careful not to overstretch yourself.”

Turning to our local experts, The Diamond Shop’s Sera Cruickshank and Marketing Manager Sophie de Renzy shared their own tips on how to elegantly weave diamonds into the everyday.

“This summer, diamonds aren’t just for special occasions—think of them as everyday luxury, accessible and wearable” says Cruickshank. “Whether you’re heading to a beachside brunch, a garden party, or an evening dinner, fine jewellery effortlessly complements your look, adding a touch of elegance without feeling overdone.”

For a laid-back yet chic look, pair diamond studs or a simple chain with a flowy dress for a casual brunch or afternoon outing. As the evening sets in, elevate your outfit with layered necklaces or a statement earring, adding an elegant touch to your dinner date or rooftop party ensemble. The key is keeping things refined yet approachable—mix and match: stack rings, pair dainty earrings with bold designs, and keep it effortless. This summer, the perfect piece is always ready to wear, whether you’re dressing up or down.

Buying diamonds doesn’t have to feel out of reach. With pieces priced under $1,600, luxury becomes more accessible than ever, allowing you to indulge in timeless elegance without the commitment of a major investment. Our Christmas Gift Guide is both effortlessly chic and attainable, for every moment worth celebrating.

  1. Diamond Studs

Diamond studs are the ultimate classic when you want to look stylish but also need jewellery that is comfortable and wearable daily. Paired with a casual look or dressed up, they offer versatility and elegance for any occasion. Think of them as the “little black dress” of the jewellery world.

  1. Gold Hoops & Huggies

The versatility and ability to pull any outfit together make hoops and huggies a must have in every luxury collection – they can be worn to nearly any occasion, stacked with diamond studs or multiple pairs for a more edgy look. Inexpensive and durable, you’ll be adding to your wishlist today.

  1. Simple Gold Band

Much like a diamond solitaire engagement ring, there’s nothing more classic than a gold band. For centuries, gold bands have been adorning both wedding sets and ring fingers as a symbol of eternal love and promise. If you’ve set your sights on another wedding band then rest assured you can still add a plain gold band to your collection. Durable and comfortable, the classic gold band is the ideal symbol for the days that you want to give minimalist chic vibes.

  1. Classic Necklace

Necklaces are an ideal symbol of love and any sentiment someone would want to keep close to their heart. Start with a beautiful gold chain (we love a Figaro) or a diamond pendant necklace. These classic styles are durable and versatile, stacked or worn alone, you’ll be able to style this piece for a lifetime.
