Fashion’s most glamorous event took place in New York today, with the 2022 Met Gala returning to the event’s traditional first Monday in May slot at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. This year’s event theme is In America: An Anthology of Fashion and is built around the tenets of American style, and celebrates unsung heroes of US design. The invitation sent to attendees gave the dress code as ‘gilded glamour’ which everyone interpreted differently.
The 2022 Met Gala celebrates the second volume in a two-part Costume Institute exhibition. The first, In America: A Lexicon of Fashion, opened on September 18th, and was preceded by the 2021 Met Gala on September 13th which was a fantastic night of fashion. The exhibition itself that is held at the Museum is presented across 13 of the American period rooms in the museum reflects the evolution of American style. The Gala has long been a fundraiser for the Museum since it was conceived by Vogue’s Anna Wintour in 1995.
Today, the Met Gala is known throughout the fashion world as the most glamorous night on the calendar and something that many celebrities and designers are honoured to attend. Who gets to attend changes year to year with the guest list kept secret until the last minute.
This year’s event saw some fantastic looks take to the red carpet with lots of beautiful couture and some fascinating interpretations of this year’s theme. Attendees included Lizzo, Sarah Jessica Parker, Katy Perry, Alicia Keys, Lily James, all the Kardarshian/Jenner women, Gigi Hadid and many more. Kim Kardashian arrived last in the beaded gown Marilyn Monroe wore in 1962 to serenade President John F Kennedy. The delicate garment is sixty years old and worth five million dollars.
