Levi’s new season looks is a triumphant return to the ’90s
As the iconic Levi’s brand approaches its 150th year, it makes sense that its impressive archive of past designs is referenced as inspiration for fresh new season looks (with just a hint of nostalgia).
Remember the ’90s when Dad’s baggy jeans were the look de jour? We’re pretty sure all the Levi-clad dads around the globe breathed a sigh of relief when that trend moved on.
Thankfully, a more intelligent version of that concept returns to the collection this spring and summer. The Levi’s Baggy Dad jean is inspired by the 1990s Levi’s 550 – a looser fit that sits just below the waist and gently rests on the hips. However, the new 2022 design is looser through the seat, with a bit of taper at the hem, delivering that nostalgic baggy look but without being sloppy or just ill-fitting (if you ever stole your dad’s supersized jeans, you’ll know what we mean).
For the blokes (or those who just prefer men’s cuts), Levi’s spotlights one of its most iconic fits – the 551Z Authentic Straight jean, a throwback to Levi’s first-ever relaxed fit (it dropped way back in 1962). True to the original, the jeans feature a straighter and more relaxed fit, with signature stitching one inch away from the seams. These vintage-inspired jeans are a distinct ‘anti-fit’ – a slightly looser cut that stands in opposition to slimmer and skinner styles in the seat.
The growing trend is towards looser more relaxed bottoms, topped with a glimpse of skin (hello Levi’s High Roller Bodysuit) delivered via crops, straps, and square necklines. It’s all about having fun with silhouettes: small on top, big on the bottom; big on top, small on the bottom; and big on top of big.
